Sunday 4th August 2024
We were delighted to welcome some American Square dancers. Twelve enthusiastic visitors joined friends of Hogsmill Squares, unfortunately, storms on departure left them without sleep for 36 hours and without their Caller, Dave Heffron.
However, they were still smiling as they joined us in a fast Plus and A evening with Kevin Lovell and Granville calling.
With many local dancers on holiday, we were delighted to be joined by friends from across the South of England for a truly international friendship dance.
Dave and his party arrived the next day and took the train to Harrogate where they danced to Cliff and Gene, the Harmony Duo and Dave called too. Hopefully we will hear Dave call on his next visit!

Tuesday 23rd April 2024 St George's Day - The patron Saint of England
Firstly I received a Happy St Georgy's greeting from my friend in Germany - They weren't celebrating in Germany so the picture below that she sent me must be of English Origin.
Secondly - Hogsmill celebrated the occasion in style both in the morning Early Birds SSD and the evening's Basic and Mainstream sessions with guest caller John Mee. Once again the Pot Luck was a huge success with its variety satisfying the needs of all!
Congratulations to all those dancers who were awarded their Early Bird Badges in recognition of their progress through the Social Square Dance Programme.
Badges were awarded to Diane, Gill, Margaret, Leona, John, Kay, Roger, Sue and Kathy, many of whom attend both morning and evening sessions at the club.
John Mee proved to be a great choice to call for our celebration SSD dance and evening with some clear choreography, some lovely singing calls and a lot of fun.
Over five squares of dancers dressed up in red and white for a St Georges Day party to remember, nearly every Early Bird was there to support the newly qualified dancers.

Saturday 13th April 2024
The hall was full of laughter while dancing to Terry Chapman for our annual spring dance. 80 dancers from far and wide formed 9 square sets filling the hall. It was nice to see familiar faces with some new to. Dancing A1 with a little A2 and Plus in the afternoon to Mainstream and Plus in the evening. Once we all tuned in to the strange 'Isle of Wight' accent dancing flowed to some innovative choreography and lovely songs.
Below are some pictures of the day and for a video see our face book page.
Christmas dancing 2023.
Christmas once again arrived with a dishful of Christmas songs starting on the last Monday in November - an evening of Plus dancing called by Ian. November moved into December and Granville's wide selection of Christmas tunes kept up the Christmas spirit. Quickly it came to our last Tuesday of dancing and The Christmas Party. 6 Square sets suitably dressed in some sort of Christmas attire dancing to Granville and Ian - fun was had by all and the usual 'Pot Luck' provided a wide selection of nibbles. It was nice to see Ishbel, recovering from a Hip Replacement operation, Joyce with an arm in plaster following a fall in her garden . The pictures below show Granville's Christmas Stage, the Early Birds Xmas Jumpers from the morning and the the only picture taken in the evening - Obviously we were having to much fun to take pictures!
Granville, Wendy, Ian, Ann and Colin would also like to thank the club for the very generous Christmas gift you gave them.
New Callers Dance – 18th November 2023
What better sight than a hall full of dancers and 5 new callers to put them through their paces. London and Home Counties RCA held a New Callers Dance organised by one of the new callers, Colin from
Hogsmill SDC. Over sixty dancers attended from as far away as the
Isle of Wight, Dunstable, and Cheltenham as well as Hogsmill all attending to support not only their new callers but also the other new callers.
Suzanne Fletcher Mallinson, Malcolm G, David Hewitt, Penny Warner and Colin Turvill. These new callers provided some entertaining choreography keeping the hall guessing whilst the hall having to acclimatise to their voices very quickly. They all put on very professional performances and provided both a challenging and fun dancing experience which is what square dancing is all about.
Tea and Coffee break provided the chance to taste homemade cakes all provided by Sue Wood of Hogsmill Squares and what a grand job she did – thank you Sue.
The raffle and second-hand shop provided enough funds to pay for the hall and have some left over which will be heading to the RCA to fund more caller training.
With some classic Halloween music, Granville gave us a dramatic Halloween evening. Some of us dressed up (including Tony who did not make the picture) .... but who is the little ghoul who appeared out of nowhere at the tea break?!?!?
Seventy five dancers joined us this week with over three squares at Plus, four at Early Birds and five at Beginners and Mainstream.
With our A Group at the weekend, Granville will have called to over ninety dancers, possibly a club record!
Jean Christie
We are sad to report the passing of Jean who was a founder member of Hogsmill Square Dance Club. Below are some pictures, from left to right, 'Princess' Jean in one of Rob and Janes classic cars, receiving her graduation certificates from Simon and Trudy Fielding, her trip to Amsterdam where she attended the European Convention in 2018 with Lyn, The Turvill's, Doug and Ishbel and Granville and Wendy (although not in the picture). Outside Ann Franks house whilst touring Amsterdam after the convention, at one of the New Years Eve's event and then one with many friends still dancing from the original inception of the club. Jean with her neighbour and dancing partner Vivienne where always full of smiles and week about changed from right hand dancer to left hand dancer which, most of us did not realise.
Jean's funeral will take place on Monday 11th September 2023 at 11.45 at Randall's Park, Leatherhead. Her family has asked for those outside of the family to wear bright colourful outfits in keeping with how Jean would wish to be remembered.
Saturday 21st October 2023
18 Hogsmill members took to the road, 14 by minibus to join other dancers at Tudor Squares afternoon tea dance. Annette, Brian, Alain and Catherine, Alan and Pauline, Ian and Lucy, Pat, Stuart, Sarah, Diane, Jean and Wendy joined Ian, Ann, Colin and Jill, after fighting through the usual M25 Saturday Lunch time Car Park to dance to Simon and Trudy Fielding - a most experienced pair of callers who, once again entertained dancers of various experience and ability, for an afternoon of Mainstream and Plus dancing. A highlight of the afternoon was a quick instruction from Simon when in a double pass thru formation, Girls in the centre, explanation for a Reverse Flutter-wheel. Well, a Girl Boy & Girl Girl using the outside hand the Girl Boys pull by to pick up the Girl Girl opposite. The tables then reversed for a Boy Boy and Boy Girl formation and then I got confused what I was - was I a Boy Girl or Boy Boy or a Girl Boy! The afternoon was rounded off with two duets - Simon and Trudy's voices magnificently harmonised.
18th October 2023 - Ray Parker
A big 'Happy Birthday' to Ray, who celebrated his 90th Birthday today. Ray, with his wife Ann, is one of the founder members of the club and if you look at the first entry on this page - 'November 2011 - A New Beginning' there is a picture of the then unnamed club. Ray is in the back row -left centre - (shorter than others!) and Ann is to his right.
Congratulations Ray
Saturday - 7th October 2023 - Minster Squares Autumn Dance.
8 Members of Hogsmill with a couple who recently moved away plus attendees to Granville's 'A' Sunday teaching sessions, joined together to dance to Terry Chapman. (Terry and Katrina attend regularly the 'A' Sunday sessions). Terry, having recently returned to the square dance world now his children have grown up, gave us a good work out at 'A' for the first 1.5 hours (6 Square Sets) which was swiftly followed by 3 hours of mainstream and plus (8 square sets). Terry's choreography has a style of its own and kept everyone on their toe's, but the highlight of the afternoon for me was his rendition of Can't Help Falling in Love with You - quite the show stopper - how he managed to keep out of tune but also in tune for the whole song amazed me.
Below is a picture of the Hogsmill group, Wendy and Granville, Ian and Ann, Colin and Jill, Malcom and Barbara plus Roy and Lorraine who recently moved to the Isle of Wight.
Bournemouth Bonanza 2023
Marsham Court Hotel once again hosted Hogsmill Square Dance Clubs, Bournemouth Bonanza, where, 75 dancers gathered enabling 9 square sets to dance to Granville Spencer and Ian Turvill. Dancers from around the country, Wales, Yorkshire, Essex, Devon, London, Surrey, Hertfordshire and across the water (well – Isle of White!) gathered to meet old and make new friends.
Both evening dances were fun with tricky choreography. The Saturday Morning workshop saw mainstream stretched, plus moves merged with folk dancing, old moves making a fun return. The afternoon saw an instruction to A2 which the A1 dancers relished with help of the well versed A2 dancers.
Sundays ‘Open Mic’ session saw first appearances at Bournemouth for Roy Nash (Westerners SDC) and Nick Tillotson (White Rose Squares), seasoned performances by Penny Warner and David Hewitt, those who have attended Bournemouth have seen the evolution of these two wonderful new callers. A first performance as a duet – Brothers Ian and Colin Turvill put together a confident performance. Then there was Terry Chapman – a seasoned performer, who has recently returned to the square dance world but has lost none of his pizzazz, giving a very professional performance.
Below are some pictures from the weekend and for more video's see our face book page. The pictures show, Waggoners attendee's, All Attendee's, Injury Corner (none of which were sustained at the weekend), Hogsmill Groupies, Otter Square area and All Square at zero.
BAASDC GB 70th Birthday Celebrations 21st and 22nd July 2023
120 Dancers joined the Grand March on the Saturday evening session - that made 15 square sets - quite a sight. The Saturday dance was a lot of fun as Paul Bristow and Neil Whiston called Mainstream and Plus with Teressa Hart cueing Rounds. This followed a Friday night where Di Green and Kevin Lovell called Mainstream and Plus with Judi Read cueing Rounds. Saturday day the dancing went on from 10am through to 5.30pm with Callers from up and down the country and even the European President - Claudia Kloid - oh and our own Granville Spencer.
Our thanks and congratulations go to the BAASDC committee who organised this excellent event.

Top Right picture sees Neil Whiston calling with many friendly faces - and if you look closely you will see a man in a hat with a big right boot - Kevin Lovell who tore his Achilles tendon so could not dance.

11th July 2023 - Ian Returns to calling
Hogsmill Plus Dancers were delighted to hear Ian call again after he was dramatically struck down by a knee infection. It may be sometime before Ian will be able to dance again but he called beautifully and we think he enjoyed too!
Tuesday 4th July 2023
Congratulations to Pat, David and Lesley who received their Mainstream Badges on Tuesday night. There would of been a fourth Graduate but sadly Alan could not join us to receive his badge in person. Welcome to the wider world of Square Dancing.

Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th May - Coronation Celebrations
Both our Plus and Mainstream Evenings celebrated the King's Coronation by attendee's dressed in Red White and Blue Attire. The halls were also suitably decorated (although we can't take credit for that!) and both evening stages where decorated with a plethora of flags. Granville ran the plus night and introduced us to Grand Parade whilst Ian introduced Grand Tour at the Mainstream night - Both using the tenuous links to the Coronation, Parade at the event and Tours before with songs chosen also tenuously linked. Colin also continued in his quest to become a caller and sung Any Dream will do (Golden Coat in the song) and Kingston Town. To the left and below are pictures from both evenings where much fun was had by all attendee's. To the left is Wendy and Granville with a visitor!! the top picture is from the Plus evening where the hall was very generous and placing a Throne for Granville to utilize! The 4 below from the mainstream evening - one where Ian is clearly studying hard!

Saturday 15th April 2023
Emma Horsfied gave Hogsmill dancers two great dances on Saturday. In the afternoon we danced SSD with newer dancers well supported by the Mainstream and Plus dancers. In the evening she upped the pace to entertain the Mainstream and Plus dancers.
We were especially pleased to welcome visitors from Travaux Twirlers, Worthing SDC, Tudor Squares, Cuffley SDC and Chalfont SDC as well as Emma's parents Elaine and Tony and also Paul Barnes (a former member) who was conveniently in the area to attend a very special first birthday party.
Team Hogsmill came together again helping to set up, help with tea's and clear up after, making the whole event run smoothly.
Also a big thank you to all those who supported the newer dancers at both SSD and Plus and to Ian who has run extra extra teaching sessions so that we can relax and enjoy the dancing and to Colin who has supported him and to Granville, the sole SSD teacher and main Club Caller.
Thank you to Emma for such a lovely evening and to everyone who danced.
Below is a couple of pictures of the dancing plus 1 of us having our 'Tea Break' - for video's see our face book page (link in the 'Links' Tab)
Granville's 70th Birthday Celebration - March 2023
To Celebrate Granville's 70th Birthday he left the club in the capable hands of 'Team Hogsmill' and travelled down to Morocco, with Wendy of course! They enjoyed the break in the sun and Granville even enjoyed his life long ambition of driving a jet ski. Below are a couple of snaps that Wendy sent home and I'm sure we will celebrate at the club soon.
Saturday 11th February 2023
Ian led 24 including 4 new dancers with a few newer and some experienced dancers through the Plus program. This was the second day of teaching and we now look forward to them attending the club evenings to reinforce what has been learnt. Below is a picture showing the dancers have a well earned break and lunch.
New Years Eve 2022 to New Years Day 2023
Once again, our New Years Eve dance proved a great success with a mix of around 55 dancers, friends and families attending. Granville and Ian once again provided a variety of dances, both American Square and English Folk, with the traditional Scottish selection at the end to bring in the new year - with a glass of bubbly of course! It was lovely to see some youngers - both dancing enthusiastically and well, showing that Folk and Square dancing can appeal to the younger generations.
As usual the Pot Luck was well supported and a big thank you for all the support given to the raffle both in buying tickets and supplying prizes. This enabled us to raise £460 on the night which will be donated to the Prostate Cancer and Devon Air Ambulance charities.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
Tuesday 13th December
Our Christmas parties featured real snow this year, the pavements were treacherous and the car park was like an ice rink but six squares danced at the Combined Party.
Granville and Ian kept us entertained with catchy Christmas songs and some varied choreography before we tucked into an impressive Pot Luck.
It was lovely to meet up with old friends from the three sections and to welcome the newer dancers to the whole club.
Merry Christmas and a Peaceful and Happy New Year!
Sunday 4th December, A chance to dance to another caller, not we dislike dancing to Granville and Ian, saw a coach load and 3 passengers join others from Hemel Hempstead and the callers of the London and Home Counties Region Callers Association dance to Kevin Lovell, Chair of LHCRCA and President of CCGB plus two newer callers. A fun afternoon was had by all. |
Monday 3rd October saw two visitors from Minnesota - Patti and Jerry - joining our Plus evening at Chessington with Ian Calling. They can be seen directly below the music stand in Black
BOURNEMOUTH BONAZA 2022
70 dancers attended another fun weekend of dance renewing friendships from past events. Granville and Ian put them through their paces with a variety and Mainstream and Plus dancing. Saturday morning 'Mainstream with a Twist' was full of fun and laughter with Ian bring some old square dance moves back then putting normal mainstream into Hexagon (3 heads and 3 sides), Rectangle (4 heads and 2 sides) and Sicilian formations (2 facing 2). He even tried a dance with 7 couples in a two joined square dance sets but with one middle couple - it only had 4 Basic 1 figures but proved to be rather complex to dance. Sunday morning saw newer callers showcase themselves, well done to Penny, David & Roy with Mike Belsten and Kevin Lovell our experienced callers joining in. Put the date in your diary for next year (see future events). Pictures below - some of dancing and some enjoying the breaks in the sun!
Dave Anders -1947-2022
Dave Anders loved dancing. He never willingly missed a tip and had boundless energy so it was a terrible shock for everyone when a catastrophic brain haemorrhage felled him where he stood, Morris dancing in Swanage. It was immediate, paramedics were there with a defibrillator almost instantly but nothing could be done.
Dave and Chris joined Hogsmill Square Dance Club at St Mary's, Cuddington and graduated in 2015, already familiar with many moves from Contra Dancing. Dave led the Phoenix Clog Morris Side with a busy schedule of events, summer festivals and locally outside pubs. He founded the side as there were only women's sides close by, and the mixed sides were at Watford or Basingstoke. Many Hogsmill dancers have supped a pint whilst watching his side in Ewell, Stoneleigh and Kingston, a very sociable form of dance. For many years Dave also challenged us to dance Morris for half an hour at our New Year's Eve Parties, bringing along an melodeon player and a lively group of Morris- dancing friends.
Dave and Chris embraced Square Dancing with great enthusiasm, regularly attending both Mainstream and Plus evenings and recently learning A on a Sunday. Just a few weeks ago they left the Swanwick Weekend, looking forward to dancing with all their square dance friends again in Bournemouth but it was not to be. They have also managed to fit in some spectacular trips abroad, including the Galapagos Islands, the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Dave lived his life to the full and died in the heart of the hobby he loved. He will be sorely missed by Chris and all his family, as well as all his friends in Morris and Square Dancing. Hogsmill SDC will feel his loss in our activities and our community.
A big thank you to Robert Hurst for giving Hogsmill SDC Dancers two great evenings, Plus Monday and Mainstream on Tuesday, 5th and 11th July. They were two of the hottest nights of the year and Robert kept us engaged with shorter tips but just as much fun choreography.
On Sunday 3rd July, visitors from the Southern Clubs joined us to make three squares plus four dancing four hours of A-Teach with Granville. Afterwards, Ian called full Mainstream to three squares for three hours. Only five dancers managed the full seven hours!!!! It was also nice to welcome back Doona from Australia - last visit was back in June 2017 - Picture below sight seeing with Wendy
28th June saw our traditional Beach Party.
"We love a party with a happy atmosphere!" Ian hosted the Hogsmill Annual Beach Party this year with excellent Guest Tips from Roy and Colin which were very well-received.
It was a very happy event with five squares from the three groups enjoying the SSD programme together. The Pot Luck, surpassed all expectations and all the cloths and debris had disappeared by the time I had packed the teapot away.
After an evening renewing old friendships and creating new bonds, there was more than a hint of hilarity as our novice dancers bravely attempted the single sex squares.
This is an event where we miss old friends who have moved away and all those who are still catching up on three years of holidays or playing unmissable bowls matches.
We finished the evening with Ann's favourite song, " Any Dream Will Do", Ian leading and everyone else singing along, happy in the knowledge that we still have three weeks of dance events before the end of term.
Tuesday 21st June
Carol Gerrey called to our Basic and Mainstream Groups on a very hot Tuesday evening. She kindly kept the tips short and called with no lights until the break when the sun moved round and we could open the doors wide. We all had a wonderful time dancing to Carol's deceptively gentle songs, laughing at her banter and enjoying the new rhythms and combinations within the dances. A huge thank you to Carol and also to Alan, the chauffeur, roadie and dance partner, entertaining us by joining Carol in a humorous rendition of "You Got Me".
6th and 7th June saw all classes celebrate the Jubilee.
All attending dressed up in Red White and Blue and Granville played suitable music for the occasion
On Saturday 2nd April, Paul Bristow called our Spring Dance for over seventy dancers.
As confidence returned after the years of restrictions, we decided to
organise the dance quickly before the bowling season started.
We were delighted to be joined by our dancing friends from Bedford-
shire, Essex, East and West Sussex, Hampshire and Oxfordshire. It was
lovely to hear how their clubs are returning to dancing as we shared a
picnic meal between the dances.
The SSD dance in the afternoon was a great introduction to the wider
world of square dancing for our newer dancers. There were nine SSD-
only dancers but Paul made the afternoon fun for all the Plus and Main-
stream dancers as well, who made the floor up to six squares.
In the evening, there were new guests to take the place of the SSD-
only dancers and Paul upped the tempo as we enjoyed the patter and
sang along to this Master Caller.
We donated £240.00 from the raffle and Trudie's crocheted sunflowers
to the DEC Humanitarian Appeal for Ukraine, a small contribution where
there is great need.
Tuesday 22nd February 2022 - 'Twosday'
On this auspicious date, 22.2.22, the first badges were awarded for the Early Bird Social Square Dancing Section of the Hogsmill Square Dance Club upon completion of the new Social Square Dancing Programme.
We were pleased to welcome over a dozen extra Plus visitors to join the celebration with a cake displaying the new logo, some lively and well-chosen songs from Granville and a lot of teamwork, camaraderie and laughter.
The Early Birds started as a U3A Group in October 2014 but joined the Hogsmill Organisation in 2016 to facilitate the free movement of dancers between the different sections and to give everybody the opportunity to dance twice a week.
As this group meets in the mornings, Early Birds seemed a natural title and it is very much a social group, strong bonds of friendship have been created on the dance floor which have supported us all through turbulent times.
Already there are Social Square Dance Events appearing on the BAASDC calendar and we look forward to dancing at this level more and more as clubs embrace the opportunity to enjoy the teaching stage with no pressure to go straight to Mainstream.
Saturday 22th January 2022 Mainstream Teach and Review Day
Granville ran another successful Mainstream Teach and Review session in Ian's absence. 27 dancers with visitors from Wagoners and Worthing joining the Hogsmill newer and stalwarts of the club to reinforce the knowledge gained over the past many months. Below is a picture of some of the dancing.
Happy New Year, 2022 is here!
"A Whole New World" is the perfect song as we enter 2022, with good music, friendship and a fair amount of giggling from our members and their friends! Granville and Ian gave us a very happy evening of simple square and folk dancing.
This was a smaller dance than normal but we still raised £200 for Cancer Research UK, a lovely way to start the new year.
May all your dreams come true.

Tuesday 14th December 2021
After our forced COVID break is was nice to combine our three classes in our Christmas Party evening once more. Dancers from Early Birds, Mainstream and Plus groups mixed together to dance from Social Square Dancing Up to Plus. Granville once again decorated the stage (seems to have more each year) and both He and Ian provided a seasonal themed evening - Fun was had by all. The pictures below L to R - Early Birds morning session, Granville with 'The Stage' and then Party Group photo. See our Facebook page for more photo's and video's

Saturday 20th November 2021
Four squares of dancers enjoyed a Mainstream Teach and Review Day. We were very pleased to formally congratulate five dancers on Completion of the Mainstream Programme. Barbara and Malcolm have been dancing with us for some time and we finally presented them with their club badges.
Granville and Ian called, Georgie baked a cake and everyone pitched in with the setting up and clearing away. Thank you to all of you.
We are now looking forward to Ian's Mainstream Day on 22nd January 2022 at the same hall. Below are a couple of pictures from the day.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOGSMILL SQUARES - 10 YEARS OLD
Way back in 2011 when Granville and Wendy first posted the idea of starting a Square Dance Club in KT19 - a suburb in SW London - there was much scepticism. No clubs within an hour's journey - would people like it - could it be sustained? Well, 10 years on, 3 dance sessions a week see over 100 dancers regularly attend and get put through their paces by Granville and Ian. So, the answer is yes - Square Dancing is alive and kicking in KT19.
So on Saturday 23rd October we held our Birthday Party and what fun we had. In the afternoon (from 3pm) we danced at the new Social Square Dancing Level where 50 dancers - many dancers for the first time attending a 'Big Dance' with suitable attire. One of the highlights was, two 90 year old dancers laughing and dancing to 'Young Girl' a testament to the Square Dancing Activity keeping brain and body young. At 5.30 we were joined by friends from other clubs, some making a 130 mile round trip to celebrate with us for Pot Luck and cutting of the Cake. The evening session of Mainstream and Plus again saw 50 dancers enjoying the dancing and mixing with friends in a way we didn't think would be possible a year ago. Visitors from Activ 8's, All Square at Zero, Cuffley, Lazy River, Lister, Travaux Twirlers, Tudor Squares, Waggoners, Waterside and Worthing.
During the Interval Granville and Wendy were presented with flowers and a card by Ishbel (a Local 'Angel' from day 1) and Sue (one of the founder members) and then they cut the Birthday cake. The club has grown and has a real family feel to it - the hall was set up and cleared away by many who also help during the weekly sessions. Pictures below show cutting the cake, card, presentation of the flowers and card, those who attended and some of the founder members. For Video clips see our face book page via the links tab

September 24/25/26 2021 - Hogsmill's Bournemouth Bonanza
It doesn't seem possible but 3 weeks after starting dancing again, we're off to our weekend away at the Marsham Court Hotel. 57 Dancers from various locations - Winchester, Otter Squares, Pieces of Eight, Worthing Squares, All Square at Zero, Lazy River, Yellow Rocks, Chalfont Grand Squares,Tudor SDC, Cuffley SDC, Cranford SDC, Waggoners SDC, New City Squares, Listers SDC, Activ8s, Alamo and CD Squares joined Hogsmill dancers for a weekend of fun and refresher dancing at Mainstream, Plus and an introduction to A. The Mainstream workshop nicknamed 'Squolk' by Wendy saw Ian provide some inventive Folk and Square dance mash ups. A weekend of fun was had by all. Pictures below show some of the fun - the bottom pictures show the callers relaxing by the pool before the fun started and Penny Warner who stepped up and performed during the open Mic session. David Hewit also stepped up and called a Hash (sorry no picture) well done to both. Thanks also to Kevin Lovell who performed a guest Tip too.

September 6th/7th 2021
Its seems a long time, it is a longtime since we were dancing face to face. But after 18 months of various forms of isolation we are glad to be back dancing with real people - some of us spent sometime dancing virtually to callers from all over the world. A chance that we never would of dream't of before the pandemic but thanks to some enterprising callers dancing at all levels were possible. Some even started to learn rounds and indeed continue to do so. But back to Real life - We're back and what a start to the season.
Our regular plus night saw 4 square sets with Granville working through the moves steadily - its was quite a pleasant surprise to find out how much we had remembered.
Tuesday Early Birds session was again well supported with 6 Squares all relieved to be back, then came Tuesday evening and we had our first visitors - Dave Green from Worthing Squares and also Sven and Melanie from Germany - Running Muffins Square Dance Club - and what an inventive night we had - 4 squares champing at the bit to get going but Granvilles PC decided enough of being brought out of unpaid Furlough and after 14 years of service the Computer said NO!! His back up Ipad failed to fire up and Ian didn't bring his equipment. Oh no, but, thanks to our visitors from Germany, Melanie phoned her clubs caller who sent her a couple of MP3's over the phone and hey presto we had music and many a happy face danced the whole evening. See pictures below.
Granville now has a new PC and Ian brings his - just in case
We must congratulate Geoff who managed to attend all sessions dancing for over 7 hours!
Saturday 14th March 2020 - Introduction to 'A'
Hogsmill SDC entered a new phase as we took a look at the A Programme. Granville led twenty dancers through an Introduction to the A Programme. As always there was a lot of laughter as we struggled to remember and perform the new moves.
Six people had learned some of the A programme previously but everybody found some new insight as we worked our way through the moves. We were pleased to welcome dancers from Travaux Twirlers and Waterside for this event and a special guest appearance from Roxi who accompanied Maggi and did not put a paw wrong all day!

Saturday 7th March 2020 - Callers Club AGM - Harry Preston Award
The 'Harry Preston Award' is presented by the Callers Club of Great Britain to a person or persons who have improved the most in the last year. Past recipients include Simon and Trudy Fielding (Now President and Vice President of CCGB), James Wyatt, Matt Baldry, Kevin Lovell to mention a few. 'Arry's' award, as it is fondly known, is a way of encouraging newer callers or Cuers to continue in developing their skills to further develop Square and Round Dancing and keep our hobby going.
For 2020, much to his surprise, our own Ian Turvill, was awarded this prestigious trophy at the CCGB AGM in Drayton Oxfordshire.
This award would not have happened without the guidance of Granville, encouragement from Wendy and the patience of Ann, who has suffered losing Ian to his Laptop where he has spent many hours getting dances and songs going, listening to singing (not always in tune!). Also thanks must go to the Hogsmill Square Dance Club who have enabled Ian to hone, and continue still to do, his skill at calling.
Below are two pictures showing Ian receiving the award from Simon and Trudy and one with Ann.

Saturday 15th February 2020 - Mainstream Review Day
As Storm Dennis approached, Granville led five squares of dancers through the entire Mainstream Programme, useful revision for all of us and an opportunity for Annette to practice the left hand partner role. Floor time is such a valuable commodity and days like this are perfect for cementing lessons learnt.
We were very pleased to welcome Jan and Dave from Worthing SDC and Anna and Benedict from Lahn River Wheelers in Germany.
Thank you to Paul for the fruit cake and to everyone who helped with the lunch tables and clearing up.
It was lovely to have a full day to extend our dance workshop into a social event.
Saturday 18th January 2020 - Plus Review Day
Below is a picture of approximately 50 dancers who enjoyed Hogsmill Squares Plus review day with Granville leading the way. Dancers from Lazy River, Testvale, Waterside,Tudor, Worthing all enjoyed being stretched - not just in Plus but also Mainstream, which again emphasized the need to fully understand the definitions. Lots of discussions between tips, quizzical looks on the faces and laughter all showed that the peoples minds were active but also having fun at the same time.
For Hogsmill Squares it was nice to see Bill and Sue (Sue recovering from surgery) and also Alan and Pauline, (Alan having had a stroke just before Christmas) - both looked well and are eager to return to dancing when their body allows.

New Years Eve Party 2019/20
It was our traditional New Years Party with Squares, Morris, English Folk and Scottish dancing to welcome in 2020. 62 dancers joined in for a fun evening with dances being called by Granville (American Squares and Scottish in Shirley's Absence) Ian (English Folk Dancing) and Dave (Clog Morris). Dancing was both fun and energetic, especially the Clog Morris Session, you could hear the dancers struggling to get enough oxygen into their lungs - just shows you how fit you need to be to be able to Morris Dance, is that why Chris finds it easy to do all these marathon runs! Pot Luck, as always, finds a splendid spread of nibbles for all to enjoy and we we brought in 2020 with a Champagne toast and the traditional Old Lang Syne. The raffle as usual was well supported and thanks to all who donated prizes. £400 raised from the evening this year will be going to Breast and Prostrate Cancer charities. Below is a couple of pictures of tables - sorry no pictures of dancing as we were all to busy dancing !!

All Club Party - Tuesday 10th December 2019
Once again it was time for our annual 'Hogsmill Christmas Dance'. Members of all groups came together for a fun evening of dancing from Basic to Mainstream and a Plus Tip. Granville once again decorated the stage in a very festive manor with Father Christmas climbing up and down the ladder all night! Festive fun was matched with a full evening of Christmas tunes to sing along. Ian gave some respite for Granville either side of the pot luck continuing with the Christmas themed tips. Below is a picture of all and there some video's on our facebook page (see the links page)
Isle of Wight Weekend 5-8th December 2019
Among the 80-odd people at this year's IOW weekend, there were 7-Hogsmill dancers, Gill & Karen, Alan & Pauline and Chris & myself and Maggie, with lots of other dancers whose clubs we had visited and who had come to our dances. The Ballroom just about had space for a maximum of 9-squares, although this was a bit of a squeeze, and the sessions had 2-Mainstream to every Plus dance, so everyone could enjoy the dancing, with the calling shared between Di Green & Terry McCann, who kept the dancers on their toes, much as Granville does at our evenings. With dances on Friday, Saturday & Sunday evenings, and 2hr workshops on Saturday & Sunday mornings, there was still plenty of time available to explore the island and with Sandown served by 4-bus routes, there was no necessity to use the car. Our stay was on a half-board basis and the breakfast and dinner menus were all that you could ask and with the Ferry-crossing included in the price of the weekend, it was good value and Chris & I certainly intend to make this weekend a regular in our calendar. Below is a picture of the Group plus Pauline's sister Amanda (Travaux Twirlers) with callers Di Green and Terry McCann

Mainstream Review Day with Granville Spencer - Saturday 30th November 2019
Still smiling after five hours of dancing! Granville called for four squares of Hogsmill dancers and a welcome visitor from Worthing reviewing every move in the Mainstream Programme. Thirteen Undergraduates, nine recent Graduates and eleven Plus Dancers spent a very happy day together - exhausting but enjoyable and very worthwhile!

PLUS DAY WITH KEVIN LOVELL
Saturday, 19 October 2019 Six Square Sets plus five resting were put through their paces by Kevin Lovell with a session of Plus Dancing that blew any cobwebs away from the first tip. It stretched our knowledge and reinforced the need to know the definitions as many of the moves were not danced from the standard position. There was much laughter and chatter which clearly showed how much everyone was enjoying it.
Four squares of Hogsmill dancers were pleased to welcome visitors from Worthing Squares, Travaux Twirlers, Lazy River, All Square at Zero, Waterside and Testvale Squares plus Annika's friends from Emigrant Dancer in Sweden and a couple from The Lucky Dukes in Germany who brought kuchen following the excellent German tradition! We were honoured to welcome Kevin's wife Annika who is Vice-President of the BAASDC.
We all left with foot ache, brain buzzing and big smiles on our faces - Well done Kevin ;-)
This event was fully booked in advance, please book your place for the next Plus Day on 18th January 2020.
Below are two pictures, one group and the second at the lunch break.

11 members of Hogsmill visited Steyning for Lazy Rivers Autumn Dance where, for the first time in Sussex, Leah Clarke was calling Mainstream and Plus. Leah, as a newer caller (and probably the youngest), used her youthful fresh approach to tie us up in knots calling moves from unusual locations which tested our knowledge of the definitions. Seven Squares enjoyed this evening and all went home, tired, but also asking themselves questions about the moves. It was also nice to meet up with several dancers from our Bournemouth Weekend which included Sylke and Thorsten of Germany, who are clearly fans of Leah. Unfortunately I was having too much fun and forgot to take any pictures!

Hogsmill Squares Bournemouth Extravaganza
We held our first Weekend Away at Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. Thirty-eight Hogsmill members welcomed dancers from Tudor Squares, Tilehurst SDC, Travaux Twirlers, Waterside Squares, Waggoners SDC, Buttons and Bows, Bishops Eight, Lazy River, CD Squares, Shirts and Skirts, Worthing Squares, Cheltenham Swinging Squares and Horne Swingers, Werne. It was great to have a whole weekend to catch up with old friends and to create some new friendships. It was lovely to meet Sylke and Thorsten from Germany who have contributed to the LSD magazine recently.
We were very pleased with the accommodation, the service at dinner was excellent, the choice of puddings was amazing and the cooked breakfast was lovely. The ballroom had sea views, quiet air conditioning and a beautiful sprung floor. The heated outdoor pool enticed at least five of us in for a swim, sheltered from the bracing sea breezes by a series of walls.
On Friday night we got to know each other as Granville put us through our paces with two brilliant tips from Ian interspersed. To ensure that our single dancers had as many tips as everybody else and to ensure that we all mingled with everybody else, Alan operated the Thomas Ormanzu Triangles Square Rotation System with some assistance from Catherine and Alain. Several of the dancers had already used the system at Tudor Squares, as well as our own trial-runs and we soon mastered the art of fobbing in and out and the art of adjustment for the occasional mysterious disappearance!
On Saturday morning, some unexpected sunshine tempted several dancers out for a walk but six squares preferred to stay in, dancing innovative Mainstream to Ian and singing along to all his songs.
In the afternoon, Granville led seven squares dancing Plus with an introduction to A1 which was a lot of fun.
On Saturday Evening, Granville called a Request Evening and we all sang along to Nowhere Man, One Call Away, Annie's Song, Lily the Pink, Hotel California, Black Velvet, Bring me Sunshine, All Right Now, Crocodile Rock and Maggi May. Ian chose his own favourites to sing to one being his signature tune, Robin Hood, the second was Branded Man which included a request to repeat Grand Galaxy that was learnt in the morning session.
During the evening we held a raffle for Diabetes UK to celebrate Maggi's success using diet and exercise to combat the disease. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and helped us to raise £200.00.
After a dramatically wet and windy night, nine squares enjoyed an excellent Open Mike session on Sunday morning. David Hewitt called the first tip, followed by Jane Pedler with two singing calls, Penny Warner with a patter call, our own Alan Martin with a very catchy song and finally Kath Williams, the Caller for Bishops Eight who called two sing-a-long songs.
Ian called Love Me Tender and Granville finished off with the final group of Requested Songs: Always look on the Bright Side of Life, Hallelujah, and Always on My Mind. He has promised to do Truly, Madly Deeply and All that Jazz next year!
Thank you to Granville and Ian and all our Open Mike Callers. Thank you to Alan, Catherine and Alain for mixing us up. Thank you to everyone who attended and made the event so much fun!
Below are three pictures, first is the group picture from Sunday Morning, the second with Alan at the Keyboard for the Rotation System and the final picture titled 'Bournemouth Babes plus one' with Wendy, Sylvia and Pauline joined by Alan in the heated pool - brave souls

We are very pleased that Simon and Trudy Fielding to attend our normal Monday Night evening to officiate at a graduation of several dancers. In the Center Picture below left to right - back row: Granville & Wendy with Tony, Karen, Sue, Alan, Brian, Annette, Linda then Trudy & Simon. Front row Pat, Carole, Carol, Sarah, Maureen, Geoff and Georgie. Cathy and Alain arrived later (dreaded M25) so missed the picture but received their certificates. Vivienne and Chrissie were unable to attend but received their certificates at the next club night.
We welcome them into the world of Square Dancing.

Our Traditional Summer Beachwear party was held with the usual Pot Luck. Granville provided the usual entertainment, including stage decoration with Ian ably supporting with a couple of tips with dancing all levels up to Plus. A fun evening was had by all - one tip of all men and all ladies squares provided a lot laughter - not sure about the dancing quality though but it was very stylish!

'Star Wars Day' was celebrated by Hogsmill Square Dance Club annual Afternoon and Evening Dance. Basic and Mainstream in the afternoon and Mainstream and Plus in the evening. Dancing to the world renown caller Paul Bristow, many dancers in the afternoon attending their first dance outside of their club night. 56 Dancers attended the afternoon and 57 in the evening - 36 attending both sessions - a total of 81 dancers including 20 visitors. There was much laughter in both sessions, but I think the smiles on the faces of the newer dancers after achieving success in the dance - ably assisted by the more experienced dancers and the fun put in by Paul's calls & banter- shows square dancing is in safe hands. This also shows you can have as much fun dancing Basic and Mainstream as you can the higher levels as the smile where not restricted to the newer dancers!
The picture shows the attendance of the afternoon session - more video's are available on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/hogsmillsquares

The Mainstream Group was pleased to welcome Anke to our club night with her daughter Lea and her friend Susi who lives in Surrey.
Anke was surprised to spot an entry in our visitor book from another member of her club Glad Badges in February 2018.
Susi sent this photo with a message to say, " Thank you very for having welcomed us so warmly on Tuesday. We have really enjoyed the evening, it was a lovely group."
GSI Course 22-24th March 2019
Friday 22nd March saw Ian Turvill, with Ann, set off to Milton Keynes to attend a Caller School arranged by GSI-UK (Grand Square International – UK branch). Not quite knowing what to expect or who his fellow students would be, Ian was excited by the fact the course tutors were from Europe – would they bring a different slant to American Square Dancing?
The Square Dance Tutors were, Walt Burr (Chairman of GSI Europe who reports direct to the US parent company), Maarten Weijers (Chairman GSI – Netherlands) and Tommy Schneeberger (Chairman GSI – Germany), with a leading Rounds Cuer, Martin Prufer (Germany).
The Friday evening started off with us all congregating in York House, Stoney Stratford where some 20 students in both Rounds and Square Dancing were joined by their partners (angel dancers) and some very experienced/international Callers and Cuers who would be observing. It was nice to meet up with several familiar faces from previous schools and dance weekends, plus new acquaintances. Students came from far and wide, Lancashire, Wales, Southampton – even some from Milton Keynes! They had varied amounts of experience – some just starting out and this being their first school.
The first subject was Ethics which covered both Rounds and Squares – a subject that does not sound that interesting, but Martin made it so. It also covered PPL which was eye opening – different rules in different countries. Then came Mic time, all students were nervous! We split into two Square Dance groups and one Rounds group, volunteers were sought to get the session started – best way to stop the nerves – get up first - so Ian was first up and then was able to relax for the rest of the evening.
Saturday and Sunday followed with lectures on mechanics of body flow, choreography, smooth dancing, appreciating dancer’s moods (sunny, happy, cold and damp not so keen), space appreciation, modifying calls, music and singing call techniques plus the much-needed Mic time and critique of the students by the coaches.
The Saturday evening dance gave everyone a chance to relax and dance to Maarten, Tommy and Martin where 100 dancers enjoyed an evening of Mainstream, Plus and Rounds. Dancing was almost convention speed with some very interesting choreography – what could go wrong – with sets containing 6 new and experienced callers – the answer was everything!!!
Sunday afternoon came in a flash, the drive home produced a lot of discussion and Ann even admitted learning things and found the course interesting. Sunday night we put our feet up and rested our tired minds!

Saturday 16th February was our mainstream review day. Four square sets made up from participants of our Early birds, Mainstream and Plus Groups. A day where all can learn something. Even the Plus dancers can learn something from such days - I know I did - having never done Scoot- back from such a position. From Thars and all the Tags that are now in mainstream, Recycle in half sashay or even same sex recycle to dancing sides face grand square at the same time as pass thru and clover leaf. Everyone seemed to have a 'Light Bulb' moment where a move now makes more sense. Jane wore a pedometer and we danced nearly 4 miles - who said exercise can't be fun.
Well done Granville and Wendy for putting on such a a good day.
Thank you to Bruce for the group picture

The picture to the left shows our lunch time break in the Plus Review Day. A very successful and well supported event with 6 squares for most tips. Granville again showed how you can dance the figures from multiple positions, reinforcing the understanding of the definitions. The definitions aren't the only part though, the visualisation of the definition also helps. It reminded me of a comment Paul Bristow made at a dance I attended last year - don't overthink it - just dance the move.
We welcomed visitors from Waterside Squares, Worthing SDC, Travaux Twirlers, Testvale SDC, Active 8's and Waggoners SDC.
A big thanks to Granville for putting so much work into the day that was both informative and fun.

New Years Eve 2018 - 2019
Once again many Hogsmill Dancers with friends welcomed in the new year. Once again Granville led the American Squares sessions, Ian led the English Folk Dance, Dave led the Morris, Shirley led the Scottish, but, this year we had an additional caller - a very own Jane took another step in her calling career and led an American Square Dance to the Tune of Streets Of London - and a splendid job she did. With such a variety of callers and styles of dances it was impossible not to enjoy yourself. The raffle was once again fabulously supported with almost a prize per person available. The usual Pot Luck was a great success and we welcomed the Near Year in in the traditional manor. The evening successfully raised £200.00 each for the Royal Marsden Hospital and Princess Alice Hospice. Below are a few pictures of the evening, for videos see our facebook page - link in the Links Tab.
Quote of the night must go to Dave who instructed all for the Clog Morris Section - 'Dance with Attitude'

Below are our early birds group who meet every Tuesday morning for a couple hours of gentle dancing. This pictures captures the group at their Christmas dance and as a record before a new start in January. Then a number of new dancers will join the group having heard about it at a recent Barn Dance that Granville put on for the bowls club - if you know anybody who like to have a go - bring them along

Once again Granville put on a splendid evening for us where members from all 3 groups, plus a couple of visitors - Malcolm and Barbara (60 dancers - 7 sets!) got together at our annual Christmas Bash - All levels of dancers were catered for and much fun and laughter and again an amazing 'Pot Luck' was had by all. Various Christmas attire was worn, some even flashing (lights that is! :-)) - Granville even added extra decorations to the stage this year - A good fun evening. Below is a picture of us all
A big thank you to you all for the kind gift given to Granville, Wendy and Ian.

Today at the GSI-UK dance, Hemel Hempstead, saw our own Ian Turvill appear at the Showcase Dance for new callers. 3 Square Dance Callers and 3 Cuers for rounds were able to show off the skills they have learnt at the various GSI led training days. Ian was joined by Carol Gerrey and Debbie Peel with Cuers Judi Read, Steve Sturgiss and Jill Woodall appearing at their first 'Outside of Own Club' calling sessions. Experienced callers Andrew Agathangelou lead the mainstream and Paul Hart the Rounds. The dance was well supported by around 60 dancers.
Ian reports on being very nervous for the first tip but relaxed for the second performing two of his favorite tunes - Robin Hood and Casey Jones.
A very worthwhile experience was had and all enjoyed the evening - Simon and Trudy Fielding had their traveling second hand shop and over £200 was raised which goes towards further calling/cuer training.
A picture below shows Ian (and Ann) duly decorated with 'L' plates supplied by Georgie - Thank you :-) !!

27 dancers from Hogsmill and Worthing Squares enjoyed an afternoon of dance where Granville put us through our Plus paces. Moves being called from both regular and non regular positions. If we didn’t know the definitions before, then after, having to apply them from non standard locations, has engrained them in the memory (just got to get the automatic brain recall function to work 😄). It even showed how much mainstream can be stretched.
September 18
Our new beginners class has got off to a great start. We welcomed more than 20 Newbies over the first 3 weeks of instructions supplied by Granville and Ian. In the first hour they learn the moves which seem so tricky to start with but flow into a beautiful dance (sometimes!). When joined by our ‘Angels’ we often have 6 sets for the joint session. Let’s hope the first seeds that have been set germinate to become a dazzling display of square dancers

European Convention – 20-22nd July 2018 Amsterdam
12 Hogsmill Square Dancers left Stoneleigh for a weekend of Dance at the 2018 European Convention in Amsterdam. Doug, Ishbel, Granville, Wendy, Colin, Jill, Chris, Dave, Ian, Ann, Lyn and Jean joined dancers from all over the globe – Australia, Vancouver, China to mention a few places – oh and one from Africa. In total 2161 from 24 countries. We met Doona (Australia) who visited Stoneleigh back in June 2017, Wuffi Daiss and Claudia (President and 1st Lady of the European Convention) who visited us a week before the Last European convention 2 years ago (19th July 2016), some Germans who joined us on a Saturday evening dance on their way back from the Aberdeen dance, plus dancers from Hemel Hemsptead, Travelleux Twirlers, Worthing and Milton Keys area to mention a few.
What would we encounter? Well, some fantastic callers, interesting choreography, some very friendly dancers, high temperatures and a very good workout.
So, Friday night arrived and off to the plus hall we went, wow, over 40 square sets forming up and then the Hash began – I didn’t know you could call the calls that fast, let alone dance at that pace – or were we just tired from the journey! Let’s try the Basic and Mainstream hall – again, the speed caught us all by surprise. None the less, a lot of smiles and laughter was had, and much wiping of the brow followed (not just for heat!).
The rest of the weekend followed in the same vane but, bit by bit we got used to the accents, the speed and I think everybody had a lot of fun. We completed moves from not just the normal positions, but half Sashayed (all 4 men tea cup chain for one), end of lines, in boxes, left handed to mention a few – and one hash, we had to dance half the move that they called – Partner trade turned into a Hinge – the brain was really tested, you really needed to know the definitions.
One thing I can say – the organisation was excellent, dancing was fun and the socialisation of all the dancers was excellent.
After the weekend, Granville and Wendy headed off to Ostende for some relaxation, Dave, Chris, Ishbel and Doug headed home whilst Ian, Ann, Colin, Jill, Lyn and Jean stayed to do some sight seeing in Amsterdam. Below are some pictures of both the dances and the tours – apologies to Chris and Dave who for some reason don’t appear – but they were there I promise! The pictures show 10 of the 12 outside the main halls, Amsterdam Central Station, A must place to eat, Granville and Wendy Dancing A, The Plus Hall and Team Hogsmill after a mainstream dance.
Some ‘Pub Quiz’ information:
Amsterdam Central Station sits on Reclaimed land and over 8000 piles. See middle Picture
There is 68 miles of canals – all non-tidal with Over 1250 bridges
An 18-mile canal was dug connects Amsterdam to the North Sea with a lock to prevent the tidal effect.
There are more deaths in the canals than killed by sharks of the coast of Australia.
The canals around Amsterdam are 3 metres deep – it is said to be, 1 metre water, I metre mud and 1 metre of bicycles!
Each person owns at least 2 bicycles each as there are more bicycles than people in Amsterdam!

SATURDAY 16TH JUNE 2018
Today we saw 17 members of Hogsmill Squares have a trip to Worthing Squares Summer Dance. Dancing Mainstream and Plus to callers Simon and Trudy Fielding, who tested our understanding of many moves - All 4 Men Centre Tea Cup Chain was one move that caused a lot of laughter - come on men - need to up the game! It was lovely to see so many bright summer colours - Purple was a popular choice
Granville, Wendy, Carol, Jill, Karen, Dave, Chris, Ian, Lucy, Colin, Jill, Ian, Ann, Alan, Pauline, Malcolm and Margaret. We all had a great evening with much laughter when things didn't quite go to plan. It was a special day for Pauline and Alan - it was their first 'away' dance and they equipped themselves very well. Below are 3 pictures which capture all - even Maggie (another regular at our plus nights) sneaks into one picture!

FIRST HOGSMILL GARDEN PARTY - Saturday 9th June 2018
We were grateful for cloud cover at our impromptu Hogsmill Garden Party
to thank all our dancers for their Christmas gift, this wonderful swing
seat.
Jean, Lucy and Wendy served afternoon tea in china cups and scones with
jam and cream and a selection of cakes.
Rob and Jane arrived in the Duchess, a beautiful 1926 Rolls Royce, our
guest of honour, much admired and photographed by passers-by as well as
our own little group.
With only five days notice we were very pleased to welcome 22 dancers
who raised a total of £100.00 for the Royal Marsden Hospital, including
further donations from dancers who could not join us.
We were finally able to have a chat that lasted more than the length of
a square dance break!

Monday and Tuesday 14th & 15th May 2018
These two nights saw a special guest caller come to all of Hogsmill club sessions. Brian Hotchkies is in England as part of his bi annual European tour and we were lucky enough to have him call for us. His calm approach to some moves that made us scratch our heads and the laughter that followed showed how much we enjoyed the sessions. One particular move does deserve a mention - not yet in the basic moves vernacular - the Bear Rub - it brought a lot of laughter and some strange shapes too! The pictures below are from our Monday Plus Night. It appears we were enjoying ourselves to much to take pictures of the Tuesday Morning and evening sessions. There are some video clips available on our face book page see link, in the links section or click here https://www.facebook.com/hogsmillsquares

International Evening at Hogsmill Squares - Saturday 21st April 2018
Hogsmill dancers and their guests were lucky enough to enjoy the company of 49 German dancers, still full of energy and camaraderie after a week dancing in Aberdeen. We embraced the challenge of dancing with different partners every dance and joined in with some of the extra embellishments they managed to fit in. Granville had everybody singing along to songs as varied as “House of the Rising Sun” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. He produced some fun choreography and even surprised these experienced dancers with a few moves they did not expect as well as signing 49 friendship books at our Special Club night. We all enjoyed the melodious tones of Hans-Gerd Gasser as he called a guest tip, challenging us to tune in to a new voice and a different way of calling.
Fun and friendship were very much in evidence!

Hogsmill Dance to Emma Horsfield
On Saturday, 14th April, Emma Horsfield called to 96 dancers, 60 in the afternoon and 61 in the evening with 25 dancing both sessions. We all enjoyed Emma’s interesting choreography and loved her singing particularly the Bluesy Jazz songs which suit her voice so well.
For several of the Basic and Mainstream dancers, this was their first Saturday dance and Emma gave them confidence with a fun programme at an achievable level. There was plenty of fun and friendship around as 23 nervous Undergraduates realised what square dancing is all about with the support of 36 Graduates and including Emma’s parents.
In the evening, Emma upped the pace (literally) and treated us to more of her favourite songs. Emma starting the evening with a mainstream tip which was a shock to the system for those who had been at the afternoon event - sedate and gentle to slick and quick. There was a lot of laughter and a great atmosphere as we danced together. It was lovely to welcome 30 visitors, many of whom have supported us since our first Saturday dance in 2014 and welcome us to their dances on the South Coast and Hemel Hempstead.

A coach was booked and 30 Hogsmill Square Dancers set off around the M25 to attend the L&HC RCA Friendship Dance at Kings Langley with calling from Andrew Agathangelou and Kevin Lovell. For most of the dancers it was their first trip to a dance outside of Hogsmill Squares own environment. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and many even purchased clothes for the next events they attend from the shop run by Simon and Trudy Fielding. 75 dancers and friends joined company to bring in the new year. Dancing simple American Squares, English Folk, Scottish and even some North West Clog Morris ably led by Granville, Ian, Shirley and Dave. The evening festivities were well supported by the usual Pot Luck with an ample mixture of food types being supplied by all those who attended. The excitement got to Wendy who encouraged all to complete their tasks for 1917 as we only had 35 minutes left! A large raffle helped raise funds for our two charities - Nepal Leprosy Trust & Queen Elizabeth Foundation who will receive an equal split of the £500 raised. Below is a picture showing Morris Dancing in action. If you would like to see a video of the evening then visit our facebook page (see the Link within the Link Tab)

Granville called a Plus Review Day for those who had been taught the whole programme.
We were very pleased to welcome dancers from Worthing SDC and Alton U3A SDC who
braved Storm Brian to join us for a very useful revision day. We covered every Plus move
except Spin Chain the Gears which we covered the following Monday.
It was a good day: good company, good music and good dancing!

4 Square sets spent 4 hours dancing almost the basic and Mainstream programme. Ian Turvill led the session with patience and fun. Spin Chain Thru and Thars were worked on particularly. Floor time is an essential ingredient to making dancing smooth and being able to recall moves without waiting for the brain to reboot itself! A good day even though some had tired feet at the end.

Our last evening of dancing saw us welcome two visitors from the USA - Patti and Jerry Ellingson. They reported back what an enjoyable evening they had. Sadly, no one appears to off taken any photo's.
Still, we all have the summer to look forward to and then return to our dancing in early September.

Tonight we were joined by Doona, a well known and loved lady from Australia on one her tours. She joined us for both our basic and mainstream sessions and was really amazed at our attendance. We had 5 square sets for the joint session with 3 squares at both basic and mainstream. It was also nice to see Maggi and friend from Worthing Squares. Granville put on another good evening and we had quite a party atmosphere. Below are a couple of pictures showing Doona herself, one with the group and one with Joyce and Jeff - also a letter Doona wrote to Granville and Wendy.

No it's not an April Fool test, we at Hogsmill Squares welcomed many dancers to our afternoon and evening dance with the ever bubbly Eddie James. Dancers from Circle and Swing, Cathedral Squares, Travaux Twirlers, Tudor Squares joined 16 beginners, 12U3A and 16 Graduated dancers from Hogsmill club for the afternoon session. The evening dance saw additional dancers from Tudor Squares plus dancers from Worthing Squares, Lazy River, CD Squares and Sunny Allemanders with 24 Hogsmill Squares dancers. In total we had 55 dancers for the afternoon and 57 for the evening. We would like to thank all who joined us helping our new recruits through the dances.
Our afternoon session saw a number of dancers attending their first American Square Dance. The dance was split into Basic and Mainstream tips. Eddie wove his magic and Six square sets saw how adaptable the Basic and Mainstream programmes can be, there was a lot of laughter which just shows you how much fun square dancing can be! people of all skill levels just enjoying an afternoon together.
The evenings dance of Mainstream and Plus was a similar success to that of the afternoon. Again six square sets were twisted and turned by Eddies inventive choreography. The Pot Luck selection, as usual, was well supported with a wide variety of nibbles, sandwiches and cakes which suited all tastes. Just like the afternoon session much laughter could be heard and lively chatter after each tip, no doubt discussing how that move didn't quite go to plan or how much fun it was to do a move that way!
A big thanks to all who helped Wendy and Granville set things up but a special thanks to Eddie for an afternoon and evening of fun dancing.

News Years Eve - 2016/17
60 Dancers and friends joined together to see the new year in. Granville, Ian and Shirley led American, English and Scottish Dancing. Much fun was had by all. The usual 'Pot Luck' supper was again a great success and an impressive selection of food enabled all tastes to be caterred for. The evening was run as a charity event and with the raffle we managed to achieve an impressive £400 which will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support Support and Princess Alice Hospice in Esher.

Tuesday 11th October 2016 Our 5th Anniversary
We celebrated our 5th Anniversary - where has the time gone! Below is a picture showing those intrepid dancers who attended our first group, then there is a picture of those who attended the 5th anniversary evening who are still dancing - They haven't aged at all! Dancing keeps you young.
At the evening we continued with our beginners group first before we had a break for tea coffee and a spread a spread of delicious cakes was enjoyed by all. Then more mainstream dancing. A fun celebratory dance led by our ever patient caller Granville, ably assisted by Wendy.
